HULA HOOP SPORT | WHY IS IT BANNED IN THIS COUNTRY?

Summary

Hula hooping is a popular sport around the world, but it has been banned in Japan for indecency and in Russia because it illustrates "the emptiness of American culture."

Although the fad has passed, there are competitions for the most hoops spun at one time (currently 105) and for freestyle hula hoop routines to music.

Discover the history of the hula hoop sport.

For me, being a mother means enjoying my children's toys as much as they do. My natural curiosity leads me to wonder where many of these toys come from. And recently, I've been looking into the Hula Hoop sport.

Bruegel's Hula Hoops

I think part of being a mom is enjoying my kids' toys as much as they do. My natural curiosity leads me to wonder where many of those toys come from.

And recently I've been looking into the Hula Hoop. Tradition has it that the hula hoop was first made by the Wham-O Toy Company.

This is only partially true: Wham-O was the first company to mass-market its brightly colored plastic Hula Hoop in the United States.

So if Wham-O didn't invent the hula hoop, where did it come from?

In fact, from several places. As early as 3000 B.C., Egyptians were bending reeds and rattan into circles. These circles were swung around the waist, pushed along the ground by a stick, or thrown into the air.

In Greece, vine hoops were used not only as toys, but also as exercise equipment for those who were not strong enough to handle more intense training or for those who found their togas a little too tight.

Later, Greek and Roman children played with hoops made from strips of scrap metal.

On the North American continent, Eskimo children used hoops to learn spearing; they would roll a hoop and then attempt to throw a pole through it.

This fun form of target shooting helped teach accuracy to many Native Americans and First Nations people. For the Lakota, however, the hoop has additional meaning, as it symbolizes the circle of life.

A person can use up to thirty hoops to perform the hoop dance. The dancer uses the hoops as storytelling props, spinning or holding them to transform into animals and other elements of the story.

Homemade hoops began to appear in English homes in the 14th century, and were used by people of all ages.

Hooping became a craze that swept the country until British doctors began blaming the use of hoops for everything from back pain to heart attacks.

Three hundred years later, many cultures had some form of hoop, but it wasn't until British sailors visited the Hawaiian Islands that this toy got the name we all know.

Sailors saw the traditional Hula dance and recognized the similar hip movements and the name hula hoop was born.

In the early 20th century, a modern version of the hoop was made of bamboo. Australian schoolchildren used hula hoops as exercise equipment.

Soon, demand became so strong that it attracted the attention of two American toy manufacturers, Richard P. Knerr and Arthur "Spud" Melin, the founders of Wham-O.

They began producing brightly colored plastic hoops for $1.98 each, and a craze was born. In 1958, within four months, twenty-five million Wham-O Hula Hoops® had been sold.

Knerr and Melin trademarked the name Hula Hoop®, but they were unable to trademark the hoop itself because it is a very old invention.

Is a 1kg hula hoop good?

Shouldn't a heavier hoop create more resistance, thus a more difficult workout for weight loss while hula hooping?

It is true that a moderately heavy hoop, 500 grams to 1kg, is useful for training with a hula hoop. You will certainly tone your muscles more than you would with a light hoop.

How heavy should your hoop be to lose weight with hula hooping?

If you want to know how to lose weight with hula hooping, the size and weight of your hoop are very important factors to consider.

How heavy is too heavy a hoop?

It seems that the fitness industry has confused people about how to lose weight with hula hooping.

The market now produces hoops that weigh up to 4kg to meet the growing demand for exercise hoops.

Many people mistakenly believe that the heavier your hoop, the more weight you will lose, and big box stores don't care if that's wrong. They just want to make money off of what you think you need.

These excessively heavy hoops can be painful to use, and can cause bruising to your abdomen and hips, not to mention damage to your internal organs!

A hoop of 0.5 to 1 kilo is the maximum weight you should choose to lose weight by hula hooping. Anything above this weight is risky and useless.

In other words, excessively heavy hoops are not safe, and the industry has done the public a great disservice by producing and promoting these types of hoops.

But, shouldn't a heavier hoop create more resistance, and therefore a more difficult workout for weight loss with hula hooping?

It is true that a moderately heavy hoop, 0.5 to 1 kilo, is useful for training with a hula hoop.

You will definitely tone your muscles more than you would with a lightweight hoop.

Beyond 1kg, the extra weight increases the risk of injury and also reduces the duration of training with the hoop.

The repetitive movement of the hoop with a 500 gram or 1kg hoop will tone your abdominal muscles and burn calories without the risk of excess weight.

Recommended Hoop Size for Weight Loss with Hula Hooping

When we talk about hoop size, we are referring to the hoop diameter (the distance from the center of your hoop).

You're going to want a hoop that's big enough that you can swing it around your waist for as long as possible, while still burning the most calories.

A smaller diameter hoop will spin faster, requiring faster aerobic movement.

A larger, heavier hoop will spin a little slower, allowing you to hoop for a longer period of time.

It's actually the difference between running a sprint and a marathon. The marathon is better than hula hoop weight loss because you'll keep your heart rate elevated for longer, burning more calories and improving your overall metabolism.

Are hula hoops Hawaiian?

Hula Hoop, a toy in the shape of a hoop, usually a hollow plastic tube, which is rotated around the waist by rotating the hips.

It takes its name from the hula, a Hawaiian dance performed using a similar hip movement.

Although different variations of the hoop have been used as children's toys since ancient times, in the 1950s Australian businessman Alex Tolmer was the first to market a version made of a then-new material, plastic.

In his Australian department store, Toltoys, Tolmer has sold hundreds of thousands of Hula Hoops.

American entrepreneurs Richard Knerr and Arthur Melin, owners of the American toy company WHAM-O, bought the American rights. The company introduced the Hula Hoop to children in Southern California in 1958. V

From being featured on television news and variety shows, Hula Hoop quickly became a national and international craze.

Sales of the original Hula Hoop are estimated to have reached 100 million in the United States alone in just two years, but declined significantly by the end of the decade.

In 1965, WHAM-O released another version of the toy that contained ball bearings in the tube that made noise when the hoop rotated, and it is this version that continues to be marketed today.

The Hula Hoop made a comeback in the late 1980s, but sales never reached their previous levels.

In the early 21st century, variations of the hoop are sometimes used by adults for aerobic exercise, and the popular Nintendo game Wii Fit also contains a Hula Hoop activity.

Hula hooping is a great aerobic exercise that works your abs the entire time, which is great for losing fat and getting a flat stomach.

The more you practice hula hooping, the more effective the workout will be, as you will be able to do more twists and rotations.

How to get started ?

First, you'll need a real hoop. There are three different choices:

  • Weighted Hula Hoop

  • Regular Hula Hoop

  • Polypropylene Hula Hoop

Weighted hoops may be suitable for beginners as they are easier to keep around the waist.

However, the heavier a hoop is, the less energy it takes to spin it, so you may have to spin a little longer with this type of hoop.

If you think you can get back into the sport quickly, try a regular-sized hula hoop. Check out EASY HOOPS, hula hoop fitness, or Le Box Du Fitness to find a hoop.

They are fun because you can customize the colors and patterns of the bands.

Leboxdufitness offers hoops that can be disassembled for travel and even offers maternity hoops.
