What fitness exercise was popular in the 80s?

The number of fitness enthusiasts increased dramatically throughout the 1980s, for reasons no one can be certain of. Workouts of all styles and types were developed in order to achieve the desired muscular body that everyone seemed to want at the time. Most of these workouts were considered “fads” and faded away pretty quickly (phew!). Here are the top three fitness trends that we’re glad disappeared in the 1980s:

Don't hesitate to read our article on fitness exercises and mainly the 4 movements for your lower body to try in order to take care of your legs and buttocks in the best possible way.

3 Fitness Trends That Thankfully Died in the 80s

1. Jazzercise . This type of exercise focused on aerobic dance moves that burned calories and reduced waistlines. It's hard to believe that this type of workout became so popular! Classes were taught at local fitness clubs and were also available on VHS tapes, so the exercises could be done in the comfort of your own living room.

2. Stair aerobics . This fitness fad involved using small, portable platforms that you would repeatedly step up and down to do aerobics. This workout seems silly to me, considering you can get the same results using the stairs in your home... for free!

3. Richard Simmons workout videos . Oh boy, I think we're all glad this was just a phase! These eccentric workout videos were meant for home workouts, primarily for women. These videos didn't just cover one particular exercise; Mr. Simmons covered them all.

Who were the most famous fitness instructors in the 80s?

Fitness Flashback!

Let’s get working out! Olivia Newton John’s iconic ’80s song wasn’t just a pop hit, it was the mantra of an entire generation. The fitness craze of that decade involved donning a leotard and leg warmers and watching a VHS tape of your favorite workout routine (Jazzercise, for example) led by your favorite fitness icon. But while VCRs, and probably the videos that went with them, have become digital dinosaurs, your favorite fitness fanatics are still alive and well (in the aerobics genre, of course).

Richard Simmons:

The New Orleans native, known for his eccentric outfits and larger-than-life personality (complete with micro shorts), captured America's attention in the late '70s by sharing his personal weight-loss journey and sparked an aerobics craze in the '90s with his "Sweatin' to the Oldies" video series.

Denise Austin:

Since the 1980s, "America's Fitness Sweetheart" has been embracing a healthy lifestyle and sharing her secrets to success, but she's never slowed down! Over the years, Denise Austin has sold over 24 million videos and starred in several fitness television shows, including The Jack LaLanne Show in 1981.

Who was the aerobic champion of the dream body years in 1980 ?

These days, the '80s are little more than an incentive for themed parties. Men lazily don outfits that resemble Tom Cruise in Risky Business or Michael Jackson in the Thriller music video, while women scour Goodwill for spandex and leotards. It's easy to forget that the '80s were a real thing. Indeed, there were a number of fitness pioneers of the era who wore headbands and leg warmers without irony. Without them, who knows what the girls would be wearing to those frat parties, while you tried to get them to drink jungle juice and dance suggestively to Duran Duran. Without them, what VHS tapes would you have been watching while your parents were at work and puberty was on its way? We owe these women a debt of gratitude. Let's get "hungry as a wolf" and celebrate them by making a list of the 5 sexiest women in fitness of the 80s.

No. 1 - Richard Simmons

With better outfits than anyone else on this list, more personality than any Hollywood starlet, and a tireless work ethic, Richard Simmons is hands down the hottest fitness guru of the '80s, and he still puts modern fitness freaks like Billy Blanks and Jillian Michaels to shame. His results speak for themselves: Simmons claims responsibility for a combined 12,000,000 pounds of weight loss over the course of his career... and he did it all while looking this good. Richard, we salute you.

No. 2 - Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda has garnered many accolades throughout her career as an Oscar-winning actress, activist, author, fitness expert, and more. She's also the only person on this list to be immortalized in a Sir Mix-a-lot song. It's hard to imagine her not being the #1 most famous fitness instructor of all time. But, maybe you forgot...

#3 - Olivia Newton-John

Sometimes, all it takes is one accomplishment to achieve immortality. Olivia Newton John did just that with her video for "Let's Get Physical." While theatergoers and those whose little sisters had sleepovers in middle school will remember her from Grease, Newton-John will forever be remembered as the spandex-and-legwarmers poster child of the '80s fitness movement.

No. 4 - Tamilee Webb

Tamilee Webb was a pioneer in her own right; she was a pioneer of "badonkadonk." Tamilee Webb's series Buns of Steel and the Abs of Steel series, which is not as popular with men, made her famous.

No. 5 - Suzanne Somers

As sexy as Suzanne Somers was, we can never forgive her. Without her, there might be legitimate shows on television in the wee hours of the morning. But then again, we would never have known the joys of ShamWow, Shake Weight, and Miss Cleo's Pyschic Friend's Network if she hadn't paved the way. Come to think of it, Suzanne, we forgive you.

The Origins of Fitness

Although the popularity of fitness is somewhat of a recent fad, exercise and fitness methods have been used by a number of civilizations throughout history, including but not limited to Greek culture.

Even without considering the athletes who disciplined their bodies to achieve exceptional performances in the Panhellenic games, many nations encouraged every citizen to exercise in one way or another.

STATUS-GREEK-FITNESS-PHYSICAL-CONDITION

While ancient Greece is perhaps the most illustrious figure in the history of fitness, fitness in general has likely held a place in almost every major society throughout history. From the early development of yoga in ancient India to intense athletic activities in medieval Europe, the history of fitness and exercise in its myriad forms is steeped in time and place.

Fitness, also known as gymnastics or physical training , is a set of physical activities that allow practitioners to improve their physical condition and health for the purpose of well-being.
