THERE IS A STRANGE PARADOX IN THE FACTS OF DOING HOME FITNESS

Sometimes people who own fitness equipment don't use it often enough.

In most cases, this happens because home gyms do not have the best workout equipment.

A rudimentary home gym consisting of an elliptical machine and a few dumbbells can hardly motivate someone to perform effective workouts.

To create the perfect home gym, you need to create a space that will inspire you to spend time there. The first step to creating a home gym you want to work out in is creating a space that you want to be in.

WHAT MAKES A PERFECT HOME FITNESS ROOM?

There is no single answer to this question.

An ideal home gym for you depends on your fitness goals and preferences.

The most important factor to consider is what hardware and accessories you need to invest in to get the most out of your experience.

If you are training for muscle development, your basic equipment will consist of a bench and a squat rack.

On the other hand, if your primary goal is endurance training or Olympic weightlifting, look for equipment that will help you achieve your fitness goals.

Whether your gym is in your garage, basement, or a spare room in your house, it should appeal to you.

Here are some ways to improve your home gym experience and boost your results:

CREATE THE IDEAL ATMOSPHERE FOR TRAINING

Besides the equipment, the secret to a good home gym is the atmosphere.

Some people like a dark room to focus on their weight training, while others need natural light and bright colors.

Find out what works for you and recreate it in your personal training space. Beyond colors and lighting, you should decorate your home gym for inspiration.

Posters of your favorite fitness icons, trophies, flags, or memorabilia are a great way to inspire yourself during your workout. Think about music when deciding what to include in your space.

Create a few playlists to listen to during your workouts and play them on speakers in your gym.

INCLUDE A MIRROR IN THE TORTURE ROOM

Be sure to include a mirror, whether floor-to-ceiling or freestanding.

Mirrors allow you to monitor your progress and help you maintain correct exercise form. It is important to use proper mechanics to avoid injury.

With an exercise like the deadlift, you need to keep a neutral spine to avoid hurting your back. A mirror can help you maintain perfect form if you position it correctly.

You may want to consider having a few mirrors in your home gym so that you can observe yourself from different angles during different workouts.

THE BEST FITNESS TRAINING EQUIPMENT

When looking for equipment, consider multi-use options.

Having a piece of equipment that allows for different types of workouts saves you the hassle of a gym membership and takes up less space. Exercise racks, for example, can be an integral and transformative piece of equipment in your home gym.

Racks can be an all-in-one gym solution that accommodates a variety of accessories.

With the weight rack, you can safely and effectively perform workouts that will help you achieve your fitness goals. Weight racks can be used for weight lifting exercises, bench presses, and pull-ups.

INVEST IN THE NECESSARY EQUIPMENT

To get the most out of your workouts, consider investing in the necessary accessories.

Olympic barbells are the standard, but mixing up your strength training with other equipment can boost your results.

For example, adding a pull-up bar to your workout allows you to pull weights without compromising your lower back.

If you have the opportunity to exercise outdoors, there are a few additional pieces of equipment that can enhance your experience.

Heavy hammers and sleds can build your functional strength while providing variety that keeps you engaged and motivated.

BE ORGANIZED YOU WILL BE MORE PRODUCTIVE

Walking into your gym with weights and equipment all messed up can be off-putting, in both public and private gyms.

Keeping your home gym organized will enhance your workout experience. Consider purchasing a weight rack and other storage items that will help keep everything organized.

Depending on how much space you have, a small desk can accommodate your workout routines and stereo. Whatever you decide, keep in mind ways to maximize your strength-building time while minimizing cleanup efforts.

GETTING SET UP TO SUCCEED IN OUR FITNESS

The frequency of exercise depends on where and how you set up your home gym.

"Most of the time, fitness rooms are relegated to the basement, which is usually the least inviting space in the house and the easiest place to forget about. The more natural light, the brighter your workout space, the better."

You can also consider a more radical solution.

“In France, the kitchen is now more integrated into the living area and the gym is moving in the same direction,” suggests Kim. “You might be able to create a workout space in your main living area. Plus, a lot of people have a spare bedroom. But how often do you have a guest staying overnight?”

WINNING STRATEGIES FOR MORE RESULTS

Even the best home gym becomes a waste if it's never used.

“The biggest mistake people make with a home gym is that because it’s so easy and it’s there, they forget to schedule exercise into their day,” Kim said.

“Plan when and for how long you will work out and tell your family or roommates that this is your fitness time to exercise.”

You also need to have a plan "B." There are always things that are going to happen, so you need to have a strategy for how you are going to handle them.

For example, if I am injured, I will use the equipment to do my rehabilitation exercises."

Training also needs to be planned, Kim said. "You need to know what you want to achieve. You need a road map, a long-term goal, and you break it down into short-term goals.

The secret to a good workout is to always try to do a little more than you were doing before."

And when the novelty of having your own balance board and resistance bands wears off? Get organized and plan ahead.

Visual cues such as running shoes by the bed or posting your exercise routine can help, Kim advised.

If you're into gadgets, try wearable technology, such as smartwatches and fitness bands, which cost between €50 and €100 and can also keep you motivated by tracking your progress, he added.

"The key is to make sure you can continually challenge yourself. Once it becomes monotonous and boring, you will lose interest," Mr Kim advised.

Change the intensity, the number of repetitions, the type of equipment, use your own body instead of always relying on the equipment."

And if you do relapse, don't beat yourself up. "Guilt is not a reason to start exercising again," Kim says. "Just think of it as a way to reevaluate what you're doing.

Reframe the way you talk to yourself. If you can change the thoughts surrounding your behavior from negative to more motivating, it will help you achieve your goals in the long run."

WHAT SHOULD YOU BUY FOR A GOOD FITNESS ROOM?

Space, budget, and training goals will shape your gear list, but the most crucial factor is often overlooked.

“People often ask me what’s the best exercise they can do, and the answer is the one you’re actually going to do,” Kim said. More often than not, it’s going to be the type of exercise you enjoy.

“We’ve all seen machines at home that end up as expensive hangers or in the garage,” he added, so take advantage of free trial sessions at gyms to get a feel for the equipment before taking the plunge and buying.

And, before you break the bank, compare the costs with the fees of a local gym.

The average monthly expense in France is $41. That's 492 euros per year, or 1,476 euros over three years, not including travel expenses, sportswear and incidentals such as locker rental.

But no matter how much your budget is, don't cover every square inch of your gym space with equipment, Kim said.

"The idea is to keep some flexibility, because as you improve, you may want to do different exercises."

Endurance machines, such as rowers, stationary bikes, or treadmills, train the cardiovascular system and range in price from $800 for a good-quality machine at the lower end of the scale to more than $5,000 for a treadmill with extras like a cooling fan, HD console, MP3 player, and heart rate display. Most people like to have one of these machines, but not several.

Foldable gear is generally cheaper and has the advantage of saving space, but there is a downside. “Lightweight portable gear has come a long way, but it’s not as durable as stationary gear,” Kim warns. “Ideally, buy the best you can afford, even if it’s foldable.”

Look for longer-term or lifetime warranties, which indicate better durability than a basic 90-day warranty. And make sure the running deck is long enough if you're buying a treadmill.

While 50 inches is enough for walking, runners need at least 55 inches — more if you're tall or take particularly long strides.

If your space or budget doesn't allow for large pieces, a jump rope and suspension straps are a less expensive alternative to get your heart rate up and get a total-body workout, says Kim, and they also have the added benefit of fitting into a suitcase when you travel.

Suspension straps are recommended for their versatility, they harness gravity and body weight to allow you to perform hundreds of different exercises.

Plan on spending around €60 for a suspension strap set, from €35 for a set of strength training bands and from €20 for a good quality endurance skipping rope on our LE BOX DU FITNESS shop. ® .

One of Kim's "must-haves" is a lower back (lumbar) bench. "Most people sit all day, and a back bench is great for posture and firming up your glutes," he says. This bench will set you back $160 or more.

If you already own a mountain bike, you can convert it into a stationary indoor bike by purchasing a trainer, Kim said. It will cost you about $75.

For small spaces and budgets, Kim suggests getting a barbell and kettle bell set, a dumbbell rack, and an adjustable bench.

“With this, you can use resistance training to work on endurance and strength, to build muscle, or to do a cardiovascular workout,” he says.
